Freethought is sometimes seen as synonymous with atheism or agnosticism. Freethought is a system that bases belief on logic and the Scientific method and seeks to avoid faith. In fact freethought is not the same as atheism. One can imagine freethinkers could find scienfific evidence for religion. If fact there is no evidence for any religion. Therefore freethinkers almost always are atheists or agnostics. Those who practise freethought are called freethinkers.
